New Maps Plus (live!) short course in open source GIS - Nov. 30th

  • 2016-11-30
  • 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
  • UK Geography GIS and Spatial Analysis Lab

The University of Kentucky Department of Geography and the New Maps Plus Program are pleased to announce a one day, hands-on training/continuing education class in QGIS held in the UK Geography GIS and Spatial Analysis Lab on the UK campus.

NMP 101: Mapping with QGIS

Location: UK Geography GIS and Spatial Analysis Lab

Date: Wednesday, November 30, 11am - 4pm

Cost: $295.00

Target Student: Those who are familiar with GIS and interested in open source (free) desktop GIS solutions.

QGIS is the leading open source mapping application with a robust suite of geoprocessing and cartographic tools. In this 5-hour course, we will use QGIS to build a complete map making workflow. We begin by exploring how easily QGIS imports multiple data formats and can create new features within the editing environment. We will conduct vector overlay analysis, filter data with SQL, and examine the various methods of classifying and symbolizing our spatial layers. We cover more challenging aspects of map design, such as custom layer blending modes and advanced labeling techniques. We conclude the course exploring the options available in QGIS for publishing maps as geospatial PDFs and creating data for web mapping applications. We encourage attendees to bring their custom data.

If you're interested in registering for this class, please email us to make arrangements.
