Description
By joining the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves/Director's Office as a Geoprocessing Specialist I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to the conservation and management of Kentucky's natural heritage. You will work with a dedicated team to monitor biodiversity, support rare plant conservation, and provide technical assistance for environmental reviews. Your role will involve creating detailed GIS maps, analyzing spatial data, and collaborating with biologists to integrate data into ecological research projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to impact the preservation of Kentucky’s most vulnerable species and natural communities, ensuring their protection for future generations.
Holders of the position will complete tasks such as:
- Creating detailed GIS maps and processes.
- Understanding and analyzing spatial data.
- Assisting in field surveys and collecting geospatial data to support biological assessments and land management needs.
- Conducting quality control checks on data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Collaborating with biologists to integrate spatial data into ecological research projects.
- Preparing technical reports and visualizations for presentations and stakeholder meetings.
- Providing GIS technical support to staff and external partners.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online).
- Interest in and willingness to learn scripting languages (e.g., SQL, Arcade).
- Experience with GPS equipment and field data collection.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to communicate technical information effectively.
- Interest in environmental science and natural resource management.
- Familiarity with geodatabase systems and data entry protocols.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree. Applicant must have successfully completed six semester hours in computer science, data processing, or geographic information system courses.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in geoprocessing will substitute for the bachelor's degree requirement on a year-for-year basis. One year experience in geoprocessing will substitute for the six semester hour requirement. Experience in manual mapping techniques, photogrammetry or land surveying will substitute for the bachelor's degree on the basis of 18 months experience for one year of education.

Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
