  This 4-hour workshop is designed to introduce you to QGIS 3.34, an Open-Source GIS desktop for viewing, editing, and managing spatial data in a wide variety of commonly used vector and raster formats. It is lightweight, flexible, and can be installed on Windows, MacOSX, and Linux. Best of all, most will find QGIS to be extremely affordable while still providing a growing list of features and functionality. The workshop will cover the following topics:

• Workshop 002 – Automating Modeling Workflows with QGIS Model Designer
  Tuesday, October 8th

  This 4-hour class will cover building Processing Models using the Model Designer. Students will build custom tools to make repeatable tasks easier. Students will build models during class and will modify those models to make them more functional. The workshop will cover the following topics:

• Workshop 003 – GeoAI - How to Utilize Artificial Intelligence and Location in Asset Management

  The most forward-thinking organizations are making strategic investments in artificial intelligence (AI), especially machine learning, using location data as the connective thread to automate processes, improve predictive modeling, and gain operational efficiency. Most organizations already use a geographic information system (GIS) to uncover hidden patterns, gain crucial insights, and provide the best government services for citizens. Now, the benefits of GIS can be accelerated with artificial intelligence and machine learning. Join us for this interactive session where we will provide an overview of GeoAI and show examples of how agencies are using it to optimize operations.

• Workshop 004 – How to Create a Migration Map in ArcGIS Pro
  Tuesday, October 8th

  In this workshop we will be making a migration map in ArcGIS Pro. Is it important that we all make a dynamite animal migration map? No way. What this is really about is sneaking in a bunch of independently practical tips and tricks for working with publicly available data, geoprocessing, cartography, layouts, and easily sharable formats. What happens if you don't finish in the workshop's allotted time? No problem, you'll have a document with all the steps and links so you can work on it later at your convenience. Will you learn a lot? I don't know, but I'm confident you'll learn at least a little. Will you have fun? That's entirely up to you but I'll be having fun and I hope you successfully convince yourself later that you had fun. Should you deviate from the tutorial and try different data sources and cartographic symbology and creative alternative layout arrangements? Gosh, that would be cool, just know that going off road has its own risks like getting lost or rolling over. But that's when we learn the most. Should you bring your own laptop? You can if you want, but we'll be in a GIS lab with computers and software. Do you need to use your own ArcGIS license? You can if you want, but the lab will have accounts you can use. Should you expect any amount of IT assistance from me? Sadly, no; from an IT perspective I will be no help. So come on down and learn a handful of cool skills that you can take back to your own work, and probably even have a neat looking map at the end of the day that you can use to lure your friends and family into rewarding careers in geography!

• Workshop 005 – UAS workflow for GIS Professionals

  Are you ready for the next step in capturing images and creating awesome maps, board reports, department presentations, neighborhood project updates, or historical land records? Participants in this workshop will serve on a drone team, plan and fly a simple mission in the surrounding area, process the data, and create a number of final products to include: orthorectified maps, lidar point clouds, 3D models, and more. Also discussed will be how to become an FAA Part 107 pilot, how to plan and specify a UAS project request, UAS hardware and software, and the basics of owning and operating a UAS. This workshop is for folks who require the acquisition of images or videos for department /agency /school /business projects.
  
  1. This all-day workshop will begin with an orientation to UAS vehicles and payloads on the Southwest Campus of JCTCS.
  2. The participants will then be divided into small groups to observe the flying of different vehicles and sensors at multiple locations. This will include flying RGB, multispectral, thermal IR, and lidar.
  3. After flying the missions, participants will return to the Southwest Campus location for the analysis of the data collected.
  4. The lab demonstration of the analysis will be conducted in the afternoon
  5. Participants must conduct all three sessions to get a certificate of attendance, CEUs or PDHs

• Workshop 006 – Python, Arcade, and AI: Scripting in ArcGIS Pro and Web Maps

  This hands-on workshop will look at two different scripting languages: Arcade, which only works with Esri ArcGIS software in web maps, and Python in Notebooks inside of ArcGIS Pro. In addition, this workshop will discuss the use of AI to create scripts.
  
  The workshop will introduce the Arcade language and show how to use scripts to modify how information is displayed, such as building dynamic pop-up windows. The participants will participate is code development during the workshop.
  
  During the Python components, ways of using Python will be discussed, but the scripts will be created within ArcGIS Pro using the Jupyter Notebook. Data will be provided for several technical skill lessons.
  
  The final component of the workshop will utilize AI engines to write code. Which requires a different set of thinking skills. From the creation mode to the modification mode, which generally requires the user to have an in-depth understanding of data pathways.
  
  Participants need a working knowledge of mapping products from Esri. Temporary accounts will be provided to the participants. Participants may wish to bring their own laptops. The workshop is limited to 16 participants.

• Workshop 007 – Modern GIS, using Esri Online Tools
  Tuesday, October 8th, 2024

  This hands-on workshop will look at several different tools, which will include Survey123, web mapping, StoryMaps, and Dashboards.
  
  1. The participants will discuss and create a field data collection survey using Survey123.
  
  2. Creating a web map with the data collected. This is a typical workflow that needs to be followed to display information.
  
  3. Once the map and data collection survey are completed, they will be added to a storymap.
  
  4. A dashboard will also be created and added to the storymap. So, the story map becomes a one stop shop for the specific information, from collection to displaying to analysis.

• Workshop 008 – Beyond the Basics: Refining your Resume for Maximum Results

  This 90-minute BONUS workshop is open to all conference attendees! Join us after Thursday sessions for a more in-depth discussion of Resume Dos and Don’ts and bring your resume for critique and support. See how other geospatial professionals describe their work, record their accomplishments, and offer support and advice to others who may be struggling to highlight their own successes or toot their own horns. You don't have to be job-hunting to benefit from this low-stakes collaboration--all of us will, at one stage, need to produce a concise written record of our successes, so instead of scrambling then, prepare now! Attendees will leave with actionable steps to take to improve how others perceive their resumes and confidence in their own achievements.

• Workshop 009 – The Modern Kentucky NSRS Coordinate Systems

  During this BONUS informative session, you will learn about an overview of the previous state plane coordinate systems, what levels of distortion previous systems created, and the proposed changes in the NSRS Kentucky update. We will talk through questions like: How many coordinate systems will Kentucky have? What grid numbers will these systems be on? What kind of distortion should we expect? ... and many more.
  
  Ben Shinabery, PLS, is a land survey project manager at Qk4, Inc. where he specializes in high-definition digital terrain modeling through traditional survey, 3D Laser Scanning, and Aerial Drone Mapping. His experience ranges from collecting 3D data with everything from a plumb bob to high-resolution color mobile mapping lidar. He grew up helping his dad survey through the corn fields of Michigan and later ran a survey field crew in the swamps of Florida – Full spectrum land surveying: cold and frozen to hot and humid. Now, Ben would rather pick a nice day and program his drone to do the mapping for him. He prides himself on helping others visualize geographic data in an engaging and understandable way. He lives with his bride and three kids in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
